Ashley Gillanders is an interdisciplinary visual artist from Winnipeg, Canada, currently working in Columbus, Ohio. Her practice incorporates sculpture, new media, and experimental approaches to photography to explore notions of artificiality, perception, and the distance between physical and virtual space. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she was the New Artist Society Scholar in the photography department during her studies. She has been included in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally and has been the recipient of numerous grants and scholarships for her work. Her current research traces the history of the mirror’s relationship to photography into the digital realm, examining how specular bias and virtual reflections in simulated spaces redefine photographic truth and visibility.
